Just because your car is a used vehicle, it doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t get the care and attention that a new one would. You may have gotten a fantastic deal and saved yourself thousands of dollars, but it is also up to you to make sure that your car is properly maintained, so that it is still operational and running at its optimum, five years from now. If you’re lucky, your used-car dealer may have given you an extended warranty on your vehicle, and so you need to make sure that you take it back to your dealer for regular maintenance.

Do It Yourself.

Even though you may not be mechanically minded, there are a number of things that are quite simple to do by yourself, and by deciding to take this responsibility on yourself, you will be saving yourself even more money. The thought of maintaining your own vehicle shouldn’t scare you, as many of the things that are known as essential maintenance, can be performed in your own driveway. All you need are some simple, everyday tools and you should be able to complete the work without any major incidences. There are many vehicle owners who have bought used cars in Canberra and they continue to perform these simple services even to this day. Here are some maintenance recommendations that you should be able to check yourself.

  1. Oil change – This is an essential part of any car maintenance and without the right oil, your engine will not be unable to function at its optimum level and it will experience wear and tear that could have been easily avoided. Changing the oil on your car is not as scary as you think it might be. The drain plug is at the base of the engine and can be easily located, and this is opened to let the old oil drain out. Once that’s done, screw off your old oil filter and then top of your vehicle with the necessary amount of new engine oil.
  2. Other fluids – There are a number of different fluids that your car needs in order to run properly, and most of them, you can top up yourself in just a few moments. Brake fluid can be easily checked and topped up from the engine bay, and there is even a marker on the little tank to let you know if the brake fluid has gone below the manufacturers recommended point. You just screw off the top and then add the necessary brake fluid until it comes up to the line.

As you can see, these are very simple procedures that can be easily followed and carried out by yourself. All you need is a basic set of spanners that will cost you very little in your local hardware store, and you can do a lot of the work yourself. All essential oils and fluids, and parts for the engine, can all be purchased under one roof in your local car parts supply store. If you’re unsure about what to do, then they will gladly give you some advice and point out what is required.
